Chippewa Ridge

Meet at the Movati Athletic Club Parking Lot 1185 Arthur Street W, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

A circle tour of the top of a small mountain viewing Pukaskwa Pits, old beaches and dramatic lookouts. The hike takes you from Lake Superior to the top of the mountain, along the lookout trail and then down.A short version of the hike is to go as far as the ridge with the Pukaskwa Pits and then return. It is a fairly steep uphill to the lookouts for much of the way, but a couple of ropes have been installed to help. Meet at the Movati parking lot on Arthur Street at 9:00 am. Rain or fog date will be Sunday at the same time. The outing should be finished by 1:00 or 2:00pm. Contact Marian Childs at 577-1324 to confirm.

Dancing Bee Apiary Tour – Wolf Packs Event

WOLF PACKS EVENT - This event has been designed for children 6-11 years old, but older and younger children are also welcome. Parent/guardian accompaniment is required. See here for more information.

Join Nicole Landgraff Wegner of Dancing Bee Apiary as she will be giving bee yard tours. We will have three 2-hour time slots for tours throughout the day: 10am to 12pm, 1pm to 3pm, and 3pm to 5pm. Each tour is limited to 5 children. All children must be accompanied by one, and only one, parent or guardian (due to limited space on the tours).

Participants and parents/guardians cannot register for this event if they have a known allergy to bee stings.

Long pants tucked into socks, full shoes (rubber boots are ideal), long sleeves, gloves, and a ball cap must be worn by all those attending (nets will be provided to be worn over the ball cap).

To register for this event, email Courtney Mondoux (ccmondoux@gmail.com) and provide the names and ages of the children attending along with the name of the adult that will be accompanying them along with your preferred time slot.

Freshwater Invertebrates – Efts Event

EFTS EVENT - This event is for youth aged 12-15.

Come take a closer look at an underwater world full of alien-like creatures! Guest leader Nancy Serediak will take us on a journey into the world of freshwater macro-invertebrates. WE will net for these tiny critters in the McIntyre River at Lakehead University, practice identifying what we find, and start thinking about the roles different inverts play in their ecosystems and what these bioindicators tell us about the health of their environment.

Bring your rubber boots and get ready to get your hands wet!

Kam Valley Reserve

Meet at the Movati Athletic Club Parking Lot 1185 Arthur Street W, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

Join us on a hike to the Kam Valley Reserve near Stanley. This 30 acre reserve has extensive frontage on the Whitefish and Kam Rivers and remains in a natural state with no trails, except those made by deer or beaver.

Meet at the Movati parking lot (area close to Scotia Bank) at 9 am Saturday August 21, 2021. From there we will drive past Stanley to a parking area on Sideen Rd, which runs off Highway 588 about a kilometer past the Stanley bridge. It’s about 20 minutes from the meeting point. From there we will navigate the bush to the edge of the Whitefish River and explore both the river bank and inland. In the past, several notable plant species are expected and usually there is at least one in the group who can identify them.

Glacial History of Thunder Bay – Field Trip

Landmark Inn 1010 Dawson Road, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

TBFN will be offering a glacial history field trip outing with Brian Phillips and Fred Dean. This outing entails a route that will encompass traveling to Kakabeka to the mouth of the Kam into Upper Beaver Bay level of Lake Superior and then will proceed to the Kam River Valley to Little Dog Lake and the Dog Lake Moraine, returning via the Lappe Delta and the Current River. Silver Falls Provincial Park will be the final point where the trip finishes. For those interested on the return trip, another couple of stops can be added. Please meet at 9:00 am at the Landmark Inn car park. This outing will include short walks, and mostly roadside stops. Bring along a lunch, rain gear, and have a full tank of fuel. Participants are encouraged to wear masks at each stop. A route map with stops will be provided once a pre-toured route to decide on stops is established. Mushroom Search Outing

Join Len Hutchison as we look for mushrooms behind the Current River Arena. We will meet in front of the parking lot at the Current River Arena on Grenville Avenue opposite Claude Garton School. There will be no need to contact Len to pre-register. Marian Childs will be registering people once they arrive. If you have any questions about the mushroom outing, contact Len by either calling his office at 343-8508 or email him at ljhutchi@lakeheadu.ca. Mushrooms like moisture, and it has been a very dry summer, so numbers may be down this year. TBFN outings follow all Covid 19-guides set forth by Thunder Bay District Health Unit and the Ontario Government.
