UPCOMING TALKS

Talk – How Aquatic Ecosystems Respond to Stresses with Dr. Mike Rennie

Dr. Rennie is the Canada Research Chair in Freshwater Ecology and Fisheries, As-sociate Professor at Lakehead University. Dr. Rennie will talk on how aquatic ecosystems respond to stresses, such as cli-mate change, based on research at The International Institute for Sustainable De-velopment (IISD) Experimental Lakes Area of Northwestern Ontario. IISD Experi-mental Lakes Area is the world’s freshwater laboratory. The lakes in the region are unaffected by human impacts. By manipulating these small lakes, scientists are able to examine how all aspects of the ecosystem, from the atmosphere to fish populations, respond. Findings from these real-world exper-iments are often much more accurate than those from research conducted at smaller scales, such as in laboratories. This is the only place in the world where scientists can manipulate real lakes, over the long term, to understand what human activity does to fresh water. https://www.iisd.org/ela/
