TBFN Acquires 11.5 Acres in Nipigon Township

On March 30th, 2006 the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists were given an 11.5 acre property in Nipigon Township, near the junction of Highways 17 and 628 (the Red Rock Road). This property lies within the Great Lakes Heritage Coast. Much of the property is black spruce swamp, with trees between 50 and 60 years old, providing good mature forest habitat. Animals also use it as a corridor to travel to two larger areas, one of which includes North Trout Creek. TBFN’s acquisiton of this nature reserve has saved the mature spruce from clearcutting, and provides a foothold which we can use to initiate a landowner contact program in the hopes of acquiring further adjacent land.

The property at Red Rock was donated by Patrick and Brenda Dwyer. TBFN thanks the donors for helping us to protect the natural heritage we are so fortunate to enjoy in Northwestern Ontario. We were pleased to provide the donors with a charitable donation receipt for the value of their generous contribution of land.
