Kam Valley Reserve

1, August 21, 2021 @ 9:00 AM 2:30 PM

Join us on a hike to the Kam Valley Reserve near Stanley. This 30 acre reserve has extensive frontage on the Whitefish and Kam Rivers and remains in a natural state with no trails, except those made by deer or beaver.

Meet at the Movati parking lot (area close to Scotia Bank) at 9 am Saturday August 21, 2021. From there we will drive past Stanley to a parking area on Sideen Rd, which runs off Highway 588 about a kilometer past the Stanley bridge. It’s about 20 minutes from the meeting point. From there we will navigate the bush to the edge of the Whitefish River and explore both the river bank and inland. In the past, several notable plant species are expected and usually there is at least one in the group who can identify them.

Depending on the weather and water levels, we will stop for lunch at a nice area of open flat rocks.

There will also be the option to cross the Whitefish River and explore the reserve lands which front on both the Whitefish and Kam Rivers. The elevation in this area is higher and quite open with many mature Ash, Elm and Poplar trees.

In the past, hikers have used a variety of tactics for crossing, from water shoes to high boots or even waders. Expect slow moving water more than ankle but less than knee deep. Last year the group split and part crossed the river and part did not. If this happens this year there will be a leader for each group to continue the hike and return to the vehicles separately.

Expect to be back at the parking area between 2:00 or 2:30pm. If the group splits, the crossing group may be somewhat later.

This field trip will require pre-registration. Participants will be limited to 12 (leader not included). Members may bring a guest. If all 12 places are registered, let me know if you would like to be on a cancellation list. Car pooling and masks will be at the discretion of participants.

If the weather forecast is terrible for August 21, but good for August 22, I may reschedule, provided a majority of participants are in agreement.

Register by email to mcarter@tbaytel.net or by text or call/voicemail to (807) 626-3743. Registrations will be accepted in the order received. If you are registered and decide not to do the trip, please let me know as there may be a cancellation list. Registration requires full name, address, contact info and emergency contact info. Waivers will be signed before leaving the meeting point.
