Talk – Thunder Bay District Gray Fox (Urocyon cineroargenteus) Project

Come out and learn about the interesting and exciting information that we have learned so far about this fascinating species at risk. This recently established and growing population of Gray Fox in Thunder Bay District is likely now the largest and most robust in all of Ontario/Canada. Join our Gray Fox Project Team (Rob Foster, Brian Ratcliff, Lindsay Spenceley and Ted Armstrong) as they describe how the project started, provincial and national recovery efforts, how we are studying Gray Fox biology and distribution in Thunder Bay District, and what we have learned to date that may help this species at risk to recover. Members and guests welcome.

*** Outing Full *** Field Trip – Lichens at Joe Creek Nature Trail

Lichens are everywhere, but wha are they good for? The unique composite organisms are consumed, constructed with, and provide camouflage for forest birds, mammals, and insects and were a fundamental foundation of the boreal forests after the most recent glaciation. These sensitive organisms are also great indicators of habitat qualities. Join me in an outing to expand the appreciation of these integral forest organisms.

A valid Ontario Park permit (either a valid seasonal or annual permit) is required. Vehicle day passes can be purchased up to 5 days in advance from the Ontario Parks website located here: https://reservations.ontarioparks.com. Day permits are $15.50 including tax.

Talk – Of Fire and Man: Perspectives of Forest Renewal and Sustainability

Join Mac Squires and Gerry Racey as they share their experience and insight into forest renewal and sustainability. They share their enthusiasm for the boreal forest by, through vastly different experiences, telling a common story. Gerry will lead us through an overview of fire ecology and some of the processes that sustain our forest plant communities in the presence or absence of fire. Mac will explain from the perspective of an industrial forester case examples where he expended considerable effort and determination to renew conifer forest conditions in old and recent cutovers.  Mac’s talk will explain his objectives, attempts at innovation and insight gained over decades of following the outcome of his efforts. Together these provide a thought-provoking contrast within which to consider the concept of forest sustainability in a managed landscape where we care as much about forest plant communities and wildlife habitat as wood supply. A discussion period at the end will give membership a chance to provide perspectives, challenge the presenters or seek clarification.

City Nature Challenge – Mission Island Marsh

You might ask what is the City Nature Challenge?  Think of it as the world’s largest bio blitz. The competition started as a friendly challenge between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2016. The competition has grown explosively around the world, with 419 cities involved and over 1.2 million observations taken last year. 

For three days, beginning April 28th and ending on April 30th we are challenging the people in our district to identify as many living things as they can using the app iNaturalist. The images you take with your camera or cellphone will be reviewed by scientists and naturalists from the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists, and by nature lovers from around the world. Simply by snapping a picture with your phone, tablet or camera you can use the ai (artificial intelligence) built into iNaturalist to create an observation. It is that easy!

Enjoy a morning of birding and nature observation with Keith Wade. Don't forget to bring your binoculars and dress for the weather. No registration required.

Meet in the LRCA Mission Marsh parking lot for this family friendly event at 8:45 a.m. The outing will go to 12:00 noon.   However, participants can leave at any time for other planned activities. Parking is $5.00 per car or a current Explore Card purchased from the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority. This event will coincide with the City Nature Challenge.

This guided "family friendly" walk will take place at Mills Block Forest at 8:00 pm. We will look and listen for frogs and evening songsters. Meet at the Mills Block Forest Conservation Area parking lot. Wear waterproof footwear and warm clothing. Bring a flashlight. Contact George Holborn at 622-2113 to confirm. Field Trip – Hurkett Cove with Mirabai Alexander

Enjoy a morning and afternoon at Hurkett Cove when bird migration is at its peak. Don't forget your binoculars, and dress for the weather.

Meet at the Landmark Inn parking lot at 7:30 am or at the Cove by approximately 8:30 am. Contact Marian Childs at 577-1324 to register. From there, we will drive to Hurkett Cove.

Parking is free if you have an Explore Card, otherwise there is a $5.00 per car fee. Explore Cards can be purchased through the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority.
