Enjoy a morning and afternoon at Hurkett Cove when bird migration is at its peak. Don't forget your binoculars, and dress for the weather.

Meet at the Landmark Inn parking lot at 7:30 am or at the Cove by approximately 8:30 am. Contact Marian Childs at 577-1324 to register. From there, we will drive to Hurkett Cove.

Parking is free if you have an Explore Card, otherwise there is a $5.00 per car fee. Explore Cards can be purchased through the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority.

This outing will be a leisurely walk/hike through the area of Middle Falls. There is a lot of natural history to see in this area.

Visit two locations on the recently purchased McTavish Wetland Nature Reserve to learn more about the property and the wetland protected there. A walk will follow the old PD rail bed to a beaver pond and cattail marsh complex located on the north boundary of the reserve. Time permitting, we will stop at a roadside forested location on the west boundary of the property. Spring birds and butterflies seen will add to the species list for this new property.

Meet and park at the roadside of Pearl Road 5 south (exists on the south side of Hwy 11-17, before you reach Pearl Lake). Travel 630 metres on Pearl Road 5 South to where the old PD rail (Kinghorn) line crosses the road. Park on the roadside. The group will walk east along the old rail bed to reach the north west corner of the reserve. Bring water, snack, insect repellant and sun screen. This outing will introduce methods to collect a variety of organisms such as cyanobacteria, diatoms, micro crustaceans and other interesting creatures. The outing is presented by Nathan Wilson MSc who is currently studying cyanobacteria in area lakes, and Frank Barclay a microscopy enthusiast.

The event will be held Wednesday, 14 June 2023 at Boulevard Lake, (Current Avenue at Rita Street) from 6 pm to 8 pm. There is ample parking at this site.

Attached QR codes will provide some info relating to cyanobacteria, a group of organisms which are of concern in area water bodies.

Join us on June 17th (weather permitting) for a butterfly excursion as we explore what butterflies are out and about. John Walas will lead our group to the area of Stanley and Kakabeka to see what butterflies might be flying in the area in mid June.

We expect to find the northern cloudy wing skipper, dreamy dusky wing skipper, roadside skipper, and we may even find the salt and pepper skipper. The checkerspots, some of the commas, blues, bronzes copper and elfins should also still be out.

This should be a fairly easy outing with regard to trekking and footwear.

We will meet at the Movati Athetlic Club parking lot just to the east of the Scotiabank parking lot at 10:30 am, and car pool to meet up at the Stanley Hotel as our starting point.

Given that this is tick season, it would be highly advisable to wear light coloured clothing and use the appropriate insect repellants.
