Join Ashley Maloney for a visit to Pictured Lake for a tour of this picturesque reserve. The outing will start at 10:00 am from the Oliver Lake Fire Hall. Join Gene Kent as we walk along the shoreline of Hazelwood Lake looking for wetland plants, with particular focus on the Northern Blue Flag Iris. Rubber boots are required and insect repellent is recommended. To register, contact Gene Kent at kentgene@gmail.com. We will meet at the Hazelwood Lake Conservation Area at 10:00 am. If the weather is bad or heavy rain, the alternate date would be Sunday, July 10th.
While out walking in the woods you see delicate lichens draping over the branches of large, old trees, sunlight catching the dew on their tendrils as it peers through the dense forest cover. You'll miss this beauty once you leave and head back to your box in the city. But do you have to? Lichens are literally everywhere! Come explore the Lakehead University Campus with Hanna where she will introduce you to the pervasive, resilient, and colourful lichens found within our city centre. This will be an easy, guided tour, less than 2 hours. Bring water and snacks.

John Walas will lead you into the secret lives of moths and butterflies to gain an understanding of their life cycle. Learn techniques for rearing them from eggs or caterpillars, where and when to find them, while gaining an appreciation for the critical role they play in nature.
This event is appropriate for everyone about 9 years of age or older, including adults. Children (except for TBFN Efts and NEWTs) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

This hike will introduce a large new block of land (100 acres) purchased by TBFN in June 2022. The hike will be along unopened city road allowance of Vanguard Avenue. Part of the road allowance is wet with streams and beaver dams, conifer wetland, and moss hummocks. The road allowance extends through the wetland to a disturbed higher sandy ridge adjacent to the Harbour Expressway extension. Wear footwear that you do not mind getting wet. Bring sun screen, insect repellent, water, and a snack. The outing will proceed even if there is minor rain.
Join us on a hike to the Kam Valley Reserve near Stanley. This 30 acre reserve has extensive frontage on the Whitefish and Kam Rivers and remains in a natural state with no trails, except those made by deer or beaver.
Meet at the Movati parking lot (area close to Scotia Bank) at 9 am Saturday August 20, 2022. From there we will drive past Stanley to a parking area on Sideen Rd, which runs off Highway 588 about a kilometer past the Stanley bridge. It’s about 20 minutes from the meeting point. From there we will navigate the bush to the edge of the Whitefish River and explore both the river bank and inland. In the past, several notable plant species are expected and usually there is at least one in the group who can identify them.
oin guest leader, John Walas, for a stroll down some back lanes to learn about urban habitats and think about how those habitats are connected or broken apart. We will see first-hand both the opportunities and challenges that come with these back lane habitat connections.
