Join us on June 30th, (weather permitting) for a butterfly excursion as we explore what butterflies are out and about. The weather is expected to be 21C and sunny, with mild wind - a perfect day for butterflying! John Walas will lead our group to an area just up on Lakeshore Drive. We will look to see if we can find the satyr comma, green comma, gray comma, the pearl crescent, Milbert's and Compton's tortoiseshells, the elfins midsummer skippers, and the tiger swallowtails.
This should be a fairly easy outing with regard to trekking and footwear as it will be drier and walking will be easier than going to Mills Block, along with a lower density of mosquitoes. However, there are trails through some forested areas as well as rock outcrops and there may be some wet areas along the trails, but we can try and walk around them. Please dress appropriately.
We will meet at the Strathcona Golf Course parking lot closest to the Hodder Avenue entrance across from Robin's Donuts.
Register directly by contacting John Walas at johnw@tbaytel.net or call (807) 474-7633.
Members and friends will be treated to an energetic hike with highly eclectic habitat features highlighted by a provincially significant wetland and Lake Superior shoreline.
The Caldwell Lake Nature Reserve (over 100 acres) includes natural second growth black spruce, cedar and white pine forests. Other habitats include a floating bog mat, a beaver pond and meadow, Lake Superior shoreline, and cliffs. Sixteen species of orchids grow around Caldwell Lake, many of them in large numbers. Arctic alpine disjunct plants are found along the Lake Superior shore.
Come and join John Walas to explore and learn more about our winged creatures of the night ... moths! We […]
Join Nick Escott for a birding outing at the new Escott Nature Reserve where we will look for breeding birds and early fledged young.
Meet at the County Fair old gas bar area at 7:30 am. This will be a 40 minute drive. Carpooling is required since there is limited parking at the reserve. This will be an easy walk. Bring a lunch. The afternoon extension of the field trip is optional.
There is a limit of 12 participants.
