Kam Valley Reserve

1, September 19, 2020 @ 11:00 AM 2:00 PM

This field trip is open to TBFN members only.

The Kam Valley Reserve is located near Stanley, about 20 minutes from the city. There is some room for parking nearby. Access to the Whitefish River and the south part of the reserve is through the bush about 100 metres. The shoreline on the Whitefish R. extends about 500 m. east/west.

The north part of the Reserve is across the Whitefish River and is a similar distance through the bush to reach the Kam River.

The trip involves exploring a variety of terrain from mixed open forest to flood plain to muddy and rocky riverbank. There are lots of plants, fungi and flowers around and game trails to follow through the reserve.

This field trip has in the past been held in mid-August, when river levels are low, to permit easy crossing of the Whitefish R. in ordinary rubber boots. This year, the trip is a month later and there has been recent rain, so the river level will be higher. This will make crossing the river possibly too much to handle. If we do cross, expect wet feet and a change to dry boots on the other side. It may be that we can split the group so participants will have the option to cross or not. The leader will visit the reserve beforehand to check the river level.

At the end we can have lunch/snack on the south riverbank where there are large flat rocks for seating and distancing is easily accomplished and, from there, a return to the parking area.

Registration is limited to 11, (leader plus 10 participants). First come, first-served. If the limit is reached early, Sandra Barro will send out a member communiqué to that effect. Registration is by email to the trip leader, Mike Carter, at mcarter@tbaytel.net with full name, contact telephone number for the participant plus an additional contact number in case of emergency. If email is a problem, you can call or text 807 626 3743.

Sign-in – an email with info will act as a sign in. In return an email will be sent with the trip waiver and a request that the participant confirm in their reply that they agree that participating is acceptance of the waiver terms.

Registered participants will meet at 11 am at the Movati parking lot at 1185 Arthur St.

Depending on the decision on a river crossing we could be back as early as 2 pm.
