Field Trip – Ward Lake Nature Reserve Fall Outing

Saturday, October 19 @ 8:45 AM 4:00 PM

Join Gerry Racey and Cam Curran for a hike to the TBFN nature reserve at Ward Lake. Meet at 8:45 am at the Movati Centre parking lot at the West Arthur Street Marketplace for a departure at 9:00 am. We can carpool from there. Be prepared for a moderately difficult hike. Bring a lunch, water, and rain gear. There is a limit of 16 participants. Contact Gerry for details and to sign up: gdracey@tbaytel.net or (807) 355-6261. We anticipate being back in Thunder Bay by 4:00 pm.

We will be walking into Ward Lake following the southern trail (an old logging road) off Sturgeon Bay Road. The leaves will be off the trees and the forest will be settling in for the winter. We will explore some backshore areas and see some different areas of the property. This is a day-long hike. It is a 2 km walk into the reserve along the south trail and the total amount of walking for the day will be about 7 km.

Access to the nature reserve is along an old logging road with a packed surface and some wet patches. Other portions of the hike will be through the forest, and we will travel along some shoreline areas and through some shrubby or treed habitats and encounter some blowdown and woody debris. After reaching the lake, there are no pre-established trails to follow. A high level of physical exertion can be expected in some segments of the hike. Sturdy and warm hiking footwear is strongly recommended. Dress appropriate for weather conditions and terrain.
