Field Trip – Plein Air at Silver Islet
En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air”, referring to the act of painting outdoors on site rather than in a studio. Many members of TBFN share a love of creating art as well as exploring nature, and the Plein Air Sessions blend both of these passions! Explore your subject in the field – photograph, write, or sketch. Note the colours or complete a basic painting requiring later work in your studio.
You must provide your own materials, in the medium of your choice. Bring binoculars, Merlin app and camera; food and drink and dress for the conditions.
Throughout these events, artists are encouraged to engage with each other and share their experience. Art from the Plein Air Sessions may be displayed at a future TBFN meeting if desired.

Current River Park and Environs – Sunday June 14th from 1 pm to 4 pm with Frank Barclay
Discover the Current River, from the water’s edge of the Arundel St. bridge, to the dam at North Cumberland and to fisherman’s Park where it empties into Lake Superior. A bonus of abundant bird species in these areas.
MacKenzie Point Lakehead Region Conservation Area – Tuesday July 7th from 4 pm to 7 pm with Pam Cain
Explore the LRCA MacKenzie Point Conservation Area. bare rock with views of Lake Superior and rock plants. Join a post creation potluck.
Spirit Garden Marina Park – Thursday August 20th from 10 am to 1 pm with Pam Cain
Explore the Spirit Garden area at Marina Park. discover Indigenous plants, botanical drawing or paint inspiring views of Lake Superior. Instruction and materials for botanical studies are supplied. Join for botanical drawing or explore on your own.
Silver Islet – Wednesday September 9th from 10am to 2 pm with Lila Cane and Michael Dorval
Explore the quaint historic mining community with government docks providing views of Lake Superior. guided visit to locations around the Silver Islet area (Camp Bay/Sandy Beach/Sibley Creek). Maximum of 8 participants.
