Field Trip – Lake Superior Nature Reserve Two Night Overnight Boat Trip (TBFNC Members Only) *** This Outing is now Full ***

*** Note: Both trips are now full ***

TBFNC is thrilled to offer two overnight field trips to the Lake Superior nature reserves! We are providing an opportunity to visit TBFNC’s remote island nature reserves on Lake Superior. Places that few people have the opportunity to see.

Two trips (eight people each) are offered to allow the most TBFNC members access for the most economical price:

  • Trip A: July 3-5 (Sue Bryan lead) *** Note: Trip A is now full ***
  • Trip B: July 5-7 (Monika Holenstein lead) ***Note: Trip B is now Full ***

Both field trips will visit a number of remote TBFNC nature reserves:

The Owen Channel Nature Reserve is the largest, located on the east shore of the Black Bay Peninsula. This reserve protects more than two kilometres of rugged Lake Superior shoreline, large raised cobble beaches and also encompasses part of a small inland lake (Otter Lake) with shoreline marsh habitat.

Just minutes away by boat, there are three other beautiful nature reserves to explore: Spar Island, Agate Cove, and Agate Point. We also plan to visit nearby Lamb Island Lighthouse – although not a TBFNC nature reserve, Lamb Island is home to some interesting plants and birds.

Day 1 and 2: Departing from Red Rock Marina in the morning, we will travel by charter boat through dramatic Lake Superior scenery for approximately 1.5 hours before arriving at Moss Island North Lodge (info below). Here, we will spend our first afternoon (day 1) and following full day (day 2) exploring this unique area. On the islands, we will observe arctic-alpine plants, post-glacial raised cobble beaches and spectacular wilderness scenery. Participants can expect moderately strenuous hiking and travel around the island in open motorboats. Jumping in and out of the boats in wavy conditions requires a level of agility.

Day 3: We will have a morning departure to travel back to the Red Rock Marina.

Accommodation is in a rustic lodge with solar power at the Moss Island North Lodge. (https://www.northsuperioroutfitters.com/lodging). Participants will sleep two to a room. Use of canoes and kayaks is included.

More information will be sent to those that register and pay for the trip. The cost per participant is $550 per person (includes boat trip to and from the lodge, use of smaller boats to explore from the lodge, two nights accommodations and all meals).

There is a limit of eight participants per trip and spaces will be allocated based on the order that the leader receives the full payment, i.e. “first come, first served.”

There is no refund available once paid as the costs to TBFNC are set regardless of participant number.

If you are unable to make the trip, it is up to you to find a replacement (trip leaders will share names if there is a waiting list). As this trip is a unique opportunity and subsidized by TBFNC, this is offered to TBFRNC members only! (If you do not have a current membership, one can easily be obtained online here: https://tbfn.net/product/tbfn-membership)

Contact the trip leader with questions, for more information, or to reserve a place:

Payment is by cheque or cash only. NOTE: You are not considered registered until the $550 per person has been received by the trip leader. Payment may be brought to the April 27, 2026 meeting if arrangement has been made with the trip leader.
