Field Trip – Birding in the Dryden Area – Overnight Birding Adventure
Join Dryden area residents Corey and Steph Jenkins and other keen birders for an overnight weekend getaway, May 30-31 to explore some new birding areas in northwestern Ontario!
Meet your Guides: Corey and Steph live on Lake Dinorwic outside of Dryden and have spent countless hours birding in this area. They are offering to guide TBFNC members in exploring some new areas and hopefully seeing some interesting birds! (black tern, black-billed magpie, warblers, Canada jay, clay-coloured sparrow, Lincoln’s sparrow, sedge wren, black-backed woodpecker, sharp-tailed grouse, etc.).
When and Where: This event is planned for May 30-31, 2026. We will car pool and convoy along the highway leaving Thunder Bay at 7:00 am on the morning of Saturday May 30, stopping on route at a few known good birding locations (faith, Ignace, tc.); Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning will be spent birding in hotspots around Dryde, before making our way back to Thunder Bay in time for supper on Sunday.
Logistics: Corey and Steph have generously offered their home as our base of operations for this field trip! Located 30 minutes east of Dryden, with a beautiful deck looking out at Lake Dinorwic. We plan to have Saturday night supper at Corey and Steph’s (provided – wild game sausages, steaks anyone?) and relax around the campfire, listening to the area wildlife and exchanging birding stories.
Particpants will then either stay overnight there, or head to a local hotel (to be arranged by the participants) We will meet up again early Sunday for some birding around Corey and Steph’s home and a shared breakfast (provided), before heading out agin to some local nearby birding hotspots.
Accommodation: Participants are welcome to bring an air mattress or Thermarest and bedding and find a patch of floor to stay at Corey and Steph’s home, bring a tent or RV to setup in their yard, or alternatively participants can arrange their own nearby accommodations (e.g. hotel room in Dryden).
Cost: There will be a fee of $25 charged to participate in this field trip to allow us to provide supper and breakfast at Corey and Steph’s place. (Coffee and OJ will be provided at breakfast and drinking water is available at Corey and Steph’s place).
Difficulty: This field trip will consist of driving to locations with short walks on easy terrain (roads, paths), no more than 2 km of walking at any stop.
What to Bring: The field trip will take place no matter what the weather is like, so participants must come prepared for rain/cold/heat (sometimes all in one day!). There may be biting insects and participants should come prepared with appropriate clothing and/or repellant. Participants should bring lunches, drinks and snacks for both days. Participants are also asked to bring a snack or treat to share with the group (chips cookies, muffins, etc.).
This field trip is limited to 16 participants.
To Register: Please email Monika Holenstein holensmo@yahoo.com with any questions and/or to register. Once registered, participants will be given more information on carpooling, payment, food, etc.
