Field Trip – Benthic Macroinvertebrate Workshop
Aquatic macroinvertebrates are animals lacking vertebrae that can be seen without magnification. this includes a variety of taxonomic groups including the larvae of flying insects such as mayflies, dragonflies, and the dreaded blackly. Macroinvertebrates inhabit virtually every aquatic environment in our region from the small temporary pools to raging rivers. These animals are often at the base of the food chain, nourishing birds, fishes, and all manner of other creatures. With the proper knowledge on where and how to look, you can find them with relatively little effort or time.
The workshop will be led by Dr. Emma Lehmberg, Postdoctoral Fellow, Lakehead University and Dan Brazeau who works in the biology department at Lakehead and is the lead instructor for the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN).
For this field trip, we will sample two different habitats and learn the basics of now to identify different types of macroinvertebrates using a key. You will also learn some basics about the biology and ecology of these groups as well as their use as indicator species in helping to determine water quality. Both sampling sites will be on or near the Lakehead campus with the first more accessible than the second. We will do identification outside, where possible.
Sampling will occur rain or shine, but identification will move inside and the second field site will be dropped if there is inclement weather. Participants should dress for the weather and are encouraged to bring rainwear, water, snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, and rubber boots or hiking shoes. Waders are recommended, but definitely not required for participation. Tall rubber boots are often sufficient for sampling edges. We will provide PFDs for those brave enough to sample in water over knee height. Dipnets and sampling equipment will be provided.
Children over the age of 8 are welcome but parental supervision is required.
