Field Trip – Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening *** Outing is Full ***
Saturday, December 21 @ 12:45 PM – 4:15 PM

Note: This field trip is now full. We are no longer accepting registrations.
On Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 4:20 am EST, Thunder Bay is tilted the furthest away from the sun and we begin the long celestial trek back toward summer. It is a great time to reflect on the season and the quiet slumber of the forest.
This hike, weather permitting, is intended as a journey of quiet reflection in the forest in the spirit of Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The outing will be on foot or snowshoes depending on the snow conditions. We will meet at the Movati Centre at 12:45 pm and carpool out to the Cedar Creek Conservation Reserve (CCCR). The trail is a little-used and we may be breaking trail. We will look for animal tracks and birds adjacent to the headwater stream and the conifer and mixed forest, but place an emphasis on just enjoying the quiet serenity of the winter forest. It is our intent to be back in the city by 4:15 pm.
Christmas is a busy season full of excitement and commitments. All the more important to take the time to relax with a walk in the woods and see what we can see. This will be an afternoon walk. Bring a thermos with a hot drink and we will find a spot to contemplate the wonders of nature and find a way to enjoy the shortest day. Dress appropriate for weather conditions, a small sit-upon would be beneficial. Note: There are no facilities at the Cedar Creek Conservation Reserve.
CCCR is located at the end of Olson Road and is approximately 37 km from the Movati Centre. Note that Olson Road has sharp curves and hills, and may be slippery.
