Field Trip – Signs of Spring in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park *** Postponed ***
Saturday, March 29 @ 9:00 AM

*** Note: This field trip is postponed due to a winter storm warning. ***
Come out and enjoy a “Signs of Spring” hike in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park with Monika Holenstein, Ted Armstrong and Jean Hall-Armstrong. This will be a walk through the woods and out along the edge of Black Bay. We will hopefully bask in the warming spring sun and look for signs that the boreal forest is awakening from its winter slumber!
Carpooling is encouraged to save on the costs of passes and gas. People can meet at the Landmark Inn parking lot at 9 am, if they’re looking to carpool (leaving the lot at 9:15 am sharp) or at the Joe Creek trailhead at 10 am. Joe Creek Trail is a 1.4 km round trip through the forest along a lovely babbling creek. In the spring, the ice along the edge of Black Bay is still strong and provides for good walking along the coast. We plan to go approximately 2 km further south along the coast and maybe up into a wetland that is adjacent to the bay. Total hike length will be approximately 5 km depending on conditions and group. We will start the hike shortly after 10am. It is recommended to bring ice cleats of some kind, given the trail may be icy in some spots and the walk continues on the lake ice. Ice cleats can be bought in most outdoor stores and are very useful when trails are icy. There may or may not be need for snowshoes due to the levels of snow. Trip participants will be advised of conditions prior to the outing.
Each vehicle will need to have a day pass which can be purchased online (5 days ahead of hike) for parking. Some people may have an annual Parks Pass and will not need a day pass. This hike is open to 16 participants. We should finish up at approximately 1:00 pm. It is recommended to bring water and a snack. Please email Monika at holensmo@yahoo.com to confirm attendance and let her know if you will be meeting at the Landmark Inn or at the Joe Creek trailhead.
