Field Trip – Birding in the Big Trout Bay Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) Property

Sunday, April 27 @ 7:45 AM 12:00 PM

Join expert birders Mirabai Alexander and Doug Tate at the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Big Trout Bay property in Neebing Township.

The area contains breathtaking coastal forest and wetlands, spectacular cliffs and cobble beaches along Lake Superior.  Participants will hike along a portion of the James Duncan Trail, exploring wetlands and forested sections of this Nature Reserve (Note: we will be on an inland section of the trail for this outing, not along Lake Superior). Participants should be in good physical shape as the hike involves some rough terrain.  We plan to hike approximately 7 km enjoying spring birding along the trail.

This hike will take place at 9:00 am at the Memory Road Trailhead of the James Duncan Trail. Carpooling is encouraged.  Participants can meet at the at the SE corner of the Canadian Tire parking lot on Arthur St. at 7:45 am.  Cars will depart at 8:00 am sharp. Participants also have the option of meeting at the Memory Road James Duncan Trailhead at 8:45 am. The hike will start at 9:00 am sharp at the Memory Road trailhead and be completed at approximately noon.  Please indicate where you will be joining us when you register.

Directions to the south trailhead from Thunder Bay: Drive south on Highway 61 to Memory Road, then east on Memory Road to the trailhead parking lot on the left. Look for the sign.  Driving time is approximately 50 minutes.

Participants should wear hiking boots and dress in layers for the changeable spring weather and bring binoculars and drinks/snacks/lunch.

This trip will be limited to 15 participants.  Please register by emailing Monika Holenstein: holensmo@yahoo.com indicating your name, telephone number, number of participants, and whether you will be meeting at the Canadian Tire parking lot (7:45 am) or the Memory Road Trailhead  (8:45 am).
