Field Trip – An Introduction to Birding by Ear *** Outing is Full ***

Saturday, June 21 @ 7:45 AM 10:00 AM

Note: This outing is now full.

It’s summer! Birds are settling down to start nesting.  That means lots of singing: to attract a mate, to defend a territory, to celebrate the day!  Everyday, the morning chorus of birdsong is a beautiful start to the day – but do you want to know exactly who is singing?  Join biologist Samatha Krause (who coincidently did her master’s on birdsong) and explore a local forest listening to and identifying the singing birds.  Sam will give you tips on how to identify the songs and how to remember the songs so that when you are walking through the woods by yourself you can smile and think “oh, that’s a black-throated green warbler!” or “that’s an ovenbird!”

You need an early start for this one, there is the most birdsong first thing in the morning – so we will meet at the Centennial Park Parking Lot at 7:45 am and slowly hike along level trails for approximately 2 hours listening and learning!   The event should wrap up back at the parking lot at 10:00 am.  If you need to leave earlier, just let Sam know before you disappear.

There are so many birds here in the boreal forest because there are so many insects to feed on! So come prepared for blackflies/mosquitos (long sleeves, repellant).  It is often quite chilly first thing in the morning.  Dress warmly in layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures.

This walk may be postponed for windy/rainy weather as these conditions can make it hard to hear the birds.

This trip is limited to 20 participants.  Please register by emailing Samantha Krause at samkrause@tbfn.net indicating your name, phone number and number of participants.
